Fillings and root canals
Saving the tooth you have.
A filling is priced by how much of the tooth it rebuilds, so the guide gives a range and the dentist tells you the figure for your tooth before starting. A root canal is priced by the tooth: a front tooth has one canal, a molar three or four. On the NHS both sit in Band 2, £76.60 for the course. Fillings and root canals explained.
Crowns, bridges and veneers
Rebuilding what a tooth has lost.
Each is made for your tooth in a laboratory, so the range covers the work the tooth needs; the dentist gives you the figure at the examination. On the NHS, crowns and bridges are Band 3, £332.10; veneers for the look of a tooth are private everywhere. Crowns and veneers explained.
Extractions and sedation
When a tooth has to come out.
Whether a tooth comes out simply or needs a small operation is a judgement the dentist explains before anything is done, and the figure follows it. Implants and dentures
Replacing the teeth that are gone.
One implant tooth is £2,200 from planning to crown: the planning £400, the implant placed £1,000 and the abutment and crown £800. Bone work is priced only where the scan shows the jaw needs it. Implants are private treatment; dentures are Band 3 on the NHS. Implants and dentures explained.
Whitening, braces and guards
For the look of a smile, and the teeth you grind.
Whitening is cosmetic, so it is private everywhere in England; here it is done three ways, with trays you wear at home, with the plasma light in the chair, or both. Children’s braces are free on the NHS where there is a clinical need. Whitening explained.
On the NHS
Three charges, and who pays nothing.
Widney Dental treats NHS patients as well as private ones. On the NHS you pay one charge for each complete course of treatment, however many visits it takes. NHS places are limited everywhere in England, so ring 01564 773080 and ask reception what is open for you.
The three bands
- Band 1, £27.90: an examination, diagnosis and x-rays, advice, a scale and polish if it is needed, and fluoride varnish or fissure sealant. Urgent care is one Band 1 charge, even over more than one appointment.
- Band 2, £76.60: everything in Band 1, plus fillings, root canal work or taking out one or more teeth.
- Band 3, £332.10: everything in Bands 1 and 2, plus crowns, dentures and bridges.
Who pays nothing
- Under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education.
- Pregnant, or a mother who has had a baby in the last 12 months.
- In an NHS hospital, treated by the hospital dentist, or an NHS Hospital Dental Service outpatient.
- Included in an award of Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or Universal Credit with earnings within the allowed limit.
- Named on a certificate: a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate or an HC2 certificate. An HC3 certificate pays part of the cost.
Three ways to pay
NHS, pay as you go, or Denplan.
The dentistry is the same whichever way you pay. What changes is what the fee includes, how you pay it, and whether a place is open.

One band charge can cost less than several private items, and if you are entitled to free NHS treatment the NHS is the right door; reception will tell you what is open.

Questions
Asked before people book.
Why does the guide give a range?
Because the same treatment takes different work on different teeth: a small filling on a front tooth is not a large one on a molar. The dentist examines the tooth and tells you the exact figure before any work starts, so the range never becomes a surprise.
How much is a check-up at Widney Dental?
Privately, £45 for a routine examination and £75 for your first one here, with x-rays at £8.50 a small film when they are due. On the NHS, the Band 1 charge of £27.90 covers the examination, x-rays and a scale and polish if it is needed.
Are you taking new NHS patients?
Widney Dental treats NHS and private patients and welcomes new patients. NHS places are limited everywhere in England, so call 01564 773080 and ask what is available for you; private and Denplan appointments can be booked straight away.
What will a course of NHS treatment cost me?
One charge for the whole course: £27.90 for an examination and advice, £76.60 if you need fillings, root canal work or extractions, and £332.10 if you need crowns, dentures or bridges. Under-18s, pregnant women and new mothers, and people on certain benefits pay nothing.
How much is a dental implant?

Do you offer sedation, and what does it cost?
Yes. Intravenous sedation is £175 a session, for nervous patients and for longer treatment such as implants or wisdom teeth. How the practice helps nervous patients.
What if I am in pain?
Call 01564 773080 as early in the day as you can. NHS patients pay the urgent Band 1 charge; a private emergency visit is charged as an examination plus the treatment done, and an out-of-hours call-out is £195 with temporary stabilisation included. The emergency page says what counts and what happens.
Do you accept Denplan?
Yes. Denplan patients are welcome, and if you would like a plan that spreads your routine care over the year, reception will take you through it.
What if I miss an appointment?
A failed appointment is charged at £64 per half hour booked, so ring as early as you can if you need to change it.
