In short

What counts as an emergency.

Toothache that keeps you awake or stops you eating. Pain from a wisdom tooth. A broken, chipped or knocked-out tooth. A lost filling, or a crown that has come off. A swelling in the gum or the face. Bleeding that will not settle after a tooth has been taken out. A broken denture you cannot do without. If it hurts or it has broken, ring; nobody will ask you to justify it.

What happens

What we do the same day, and when to go elsewhere.

The emergency appointment is for getting you out of pain and making the tooth safe. The permanent repair is usually a second visit, planned and priced once the pain has gone. Priority goes to the practice’s registered patients; if you are not registered here, ring anyway and reception will tell you what can be done today.

The same day, here

  • Toothache from the nerve settled by dressing or removing it, the first stage of a root canal.
  • A lost filling replaced or dressed; a crown that has come off cleaned and re-cemented (£47.50 – £57.50 privately), or a temporary fitted.
  • An abscess drained, and antibiotics prescribed only when they are the right treatment, which for tooth pain is less often than people expect.
  • A tooth that cannot be saved taken out, £95 – £125 privately or within the NHS band.
  • A knocked-out adult tooth put back, if you come at once and keep it moist on the way.
  • A chipped front tooth made smooth and safe, and rebuilt at a second visit.

Go to A&E or call 999 instead

  • A swelling of the face that is closing an eye, or making it hard to breathe or swallow.
  • Bleeding that will not stop after twenty minutes of firm pressure on a clean, folded cloth.
  • A blow to the face where the jaw may be broken, or where you were knocked out.
  • Evenings and weekends, when the practice is closed: ring NHS 111, who will triage you and direct you to the local urgent dental service. Privately, an out-of-hours call-out with the tooth stabilised is £195.

How it runs

Relief first, the repair planned.

  1. 1

    Call early

The earlier in the day you ring, the sooner the slot. Tell reception what has happened and how much it hurts; you will not be asked to justify it.

  2. 2

    The examination

The tooth and the area around it examined, with an x-ray of the tooth if it is needed (£8.50 privately, within the band on the NHS), so the cause is known before anything is done.

  3. 3

    Out of pain

The tooth numbed, the abscess drained, the nerve dressed, the filling or crown made safe. That is what the emergency visit is for.

  4. 4

    The plan, priced

What the tooth needs to last, root canal, filling, crown or extraction, with the figure for each in writing, for you to decide on when the pain has gone.

  5. 5

    The repair

Booked for another day, with intravenous sedation available for anyone who would rather not be aware of it.

What it is like

Numb first, then everything else.

Arriving in pain is the worst way to meet a dentist, and the team knows it. The first job is to make the tooth stop hurting: local anaesthetic, the abscess drained or the nerve dressed, and only then a conversation about what comes next. You are not talked into treatment while you are in pain; you are given the plan to take away.

Widney Dental is at 76 Widney Road in Knowle, and treats NHS and private patients. If you are an NHS patient here, urgent care is one Band 1 charge, even when it takes more than one appointment to complete. If you are seen privately, you pay the examination and whatever is done that day, and nothing is done without telling you the figure first.

What it costs

On the NHS, or privately.

On the NHS, urgent treatment is a single Band 1 charge, £27.90, however many visits it takes to complete. Privately, the emergency visit is the examination, £75 for a new patient or £45 for an existing one, plus whatever the tooth needs that day, from the fee guide and told to you before it is done.

NHS figures are England’s band charges as nhs.uk publishes them; private figures are Widney Dental’s fee guide. One band charge covers the whole course of treatment.

Priority in emergencies goes to the practice’s registered patients. If you are not registered here, ring anyway: reception will tell you what can be done today, and private appointments can be booked straight away.

Who you will see

One of our dentists, today.

An emergency is seen by whichever of the practice’s dentists has the slot, and the harder cases have oral surgery in house: Dr Mohammed Binamin, who leads the practice, holds a diploma in conscious sedation and is a senior specialty doctor in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Solihull Hospital, and Dr Amelia Reed spent twelve years alongside the maxillofacial teams at the Queen Elizabeth and Solihull hospitals. A tooth that would once have meant a hospital referral is often dealt with here.

What patients say

In their own words.

Great support for nervous patients★★★★★

I have recently completed treatment for an implant at Widney Dental Care and although nervous at first and some initial discomfort at the beginning the whole process has been managed efficiently and professionally at all times. The care and attention to detail is second to none and the support during and after the treatment is reassuring. I am delighted with my implant.

For the whole family★★★★★

My family and I have been receiving treatment at Widney Dental Care for a number of years. I am grateful for the level of care I have received at this practice.

Quality care worth travelling for★★★★★

I find this a first-rate practice in every respect. Efficiently run including first-class patient care and treatment. Having moved out of the area several years ago and having full confidence in my dental care and treatment I still remain a patient being more than happy to travel some distance for my dental care.

Google review★★★★★

Adam takes great pride in his work, treating the fillings like a work of art.

Questions

Asked on the phone.

Can you see me today?

In practice hours, yes: call 01564 773080 as early in the day as you can and tell reception it is an emergency, and you are given a same-day appointment with one of our dentists. Priority goes to the practice’s registered patients; if you are not registered here, ring anyway and reception will tell you what can be done.

What if it is the evening or the weekend?

When the practice is closed, ring NHS 111. They triage you and direct you to the local urgent dental service. Privately, an out-of-hours call-out with the tooth stabilised is £195. If the swelling is affecting your breathing, swallowing or an eye, that is A&E or 999, not a dentist.

How much is an emergency appointment?

On the NHS, urgent treatment is one Band 1 charge, £27.90, even if it takes more than one appointment to complete, unless you are exempt from NHS charges. Privately, it is the examination, £75 for a new patient or £45 for an existing one, plus whatever is done that day, each figure from the fee guide and told to you first.

I am not a patient of yours. Can I still come?

Ring and ask. Priority in emergencies is always given to the practice’s registered patients, and reception will tell you honestly what is possible today. If you would like to stay afterwards, a new-patient examination is £75 privately, and NHS places are limited everywhere in England, so ask what is available.

My crown has come off. Is that an emergency?

Yes, if the tooth underneath is sensitive or sharp, or the crown is on a front tooth. Keep the crown and bring it: one that still fits is cleaned and re-cemented, £47.50 – £57.50 privately or as urgent care on the NHS. Do not glue it yourself.

I have a swelling. Do I need antibiotics?

Possibly, but a dental abscess is treated at the tooth: the infection is drained and the nerve dressed or the tooth removed, and antibiotics are prescribed only when they are the right treatment. Antibiotics alone rarely settle an abscess for long. A swelling that is spreading towards the eye or the throat is A&E, now.

A tooth has been knocked out. What do I do?

For an adult tooth: pick it up by the crown, not the root; if it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saliva; put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk or inside your cheek; and ring us at once. The sooner it is back in, the better its chance. A knocked-out baby tooth is not put back; ring us anyway so the gum and the adult tooth beneath can be checked.

Is it a wisdom tooth?

Pain at the very back, a swollen gum over the tooth, a bad taste and difficulty opening wide usually mean the gum around a wisdom tooth is infected. It is settled the same day, and the wisdom teeth page sets out what happens next, on the NHS when removal is clinically necessary or privately at £200 – £250.

I am frightened of the dentist. Can you still help?

Yes. Tell reception when you ring. The emergency visit is paced for you, and for the repair afterwards intravenous sedation is available at £175 a session, given by dentists who provide it in hospital. The nervous patients page says how it works.
